Indian sandstone patio, Downe Village
A generous, wrap-around Indian sandstone patio for a rendered village home: riven buff paving flowing around the house, new lawn edges and freshly planted borders tying it all together.
The brief
The owners of this rendered village home wanted a patio that did more than sit at the back — it needed to wrap around the house and connect the different aspects of the garden into one flowing space for sitting out, entertaining and enjoying the view across the lawn.
The look had to suit the property: a warm, natural riven stone that would sit comfortably against the render and anthracite windows, with clean edges where the paving met the lawn and borders.
What we did
We set out and prepared a solid, well-drained sub-base around the house, then laid riven Indian sandstone in a mixed coursed-and-random pattern for a natural, unfussy finish. Falls were set to carry water away from the walls, and the joints were fully pointed to keep the surface tidy and weed-free.
The paving was run around the corners and bay of the house so it reads as one continuous space, with crisp edges cut in against the reinstated lawn. Borders alongside were planted up and dressed with potted lilies and agapanthus to soften the stone and give the garden colour.
The result
A warm, wrap-around patio that opens the whole garden up — usable from every side of the house, with the buff sandstone, striped lawn and planted borders working together as one scheme.
