Grey porcelain patio, Farnborough Village
A sloping, tired back garden turned into a smart split-level entertaining space: grey porcelain paving, split-face stone-clad raised beds and steps, and a retained wisteria as the centrepiece.
The brief
The owners had a back garden that sloped away from the house and had seen better days. They wanted a proper, low-maintenance space to sit out and entertain, with the change in level handled by steps rather than an awkward ramp — and the mature wisteria in the corner kept and made a feature of.
The finish needed to feel considered and hard-wearing: something that would look sharp against the rendered house and black bifold doors, and stand up to everyday family use without constant upkeep.
What we did
We stripped out the old surface and reworked the levels, splitting the garden into two clean tiers. The porcelain was laid on a full mortar bed with a primer slurry — essential for porcelain to bond properly and stay put — with falls set to carry water away from the house and a drainage channel along the run where it was needed.
Raised beds and the step risers were clad in split-face stone to give texture and tie the tiers together, with wide, comfortable steps linking the two levels. Slate-grey pebble borders frame the paving and were laid around the base of the wisteria so it stays the star of the garden.
The result
A crisp, split-level patio that turns a sloping plot into two usable spaces — one by the doors for dining, one stepped up toward the garden room. The grey porcelain, split-face stone and retained wisteria give it a finished, high-end look that needs very little looking after.
