Driveway, walls & full garden makeover, Orpington area
A whole-property transformation for a large detached home: a new block paved driveway and brick boundary walls out front, and a full back-garden makeover with a porcelain patio and freshly laid lawn behind.
The brief
The owners of this large detached home wanted the whole property brought up together in one coordinated project, rather than pulling in different trades for the drive, the walls and the garden and hoping it all matched at the end.
The aim was a smart, hard-wearing frontage to arrive at — a new driveway and proper boundary walls — with a full makeover of the back garden behind it, so the house felt finished inside and out.
The driveway
Everything starts underground. We dug out to the right depth, laid and compacted a MOT Type 1 sub-base in layers and set concrete-haunched edge restraints to hold the paving tight for the long term, with the falls set to move water away from the house.
The block paviors were laid to a consistent pattern, cut in neatly at the edges, then compacted and brushed through with kiln-dried sand to lock the surface together — a flat, well-drained drive with plenty of room to park and turn.
The boundary walls
A wall is only as good as what it stands on, so we dug and poured concrete strip footings to the correct depth before a single brick went down. The brickwork was built up in a consistent bond with piers set at regular intervals, chosen to sit comfortably against the brickwork of the house.
Stone caps were fitted along the top to shed water and protect the wall, and the verge was reinstated with fresh turf to tidy up the frontage once the wall was complete.
The garden
Round the back, we cleared and reshaped the ground, then prepared and levelled the beds before laying fresh turf on quality screened topsoil — the preparation is what gives a lawn its even, striped finish and lets it root well.
A porcelain patio provides the main seating area, with gravel paths and sleeper-edged beds giving the garden structure. Everything was set to the right levels so water drains away properly.
The result
One property, done as one job: a crisp block paved driveway and solid brick walls at the front, and a joined-up garden behind that runs from the patio by the house out to the lawn and beds beyond. Because the groundwork was done properly throughout, it is all made to last.
